HouseholdSpend
HouseholdSpend provides current estimates of annual expenditures across 442 variables, spanning 18 categories of goods and services used by Canadian households.
The data cover a wide range of spending, from fashion apparel and household furnishings to cellphones and charitable donations. They allow you to analyze expenditures by average dollars per household and total dollars spent at any geographic level, from national views to small trade areas, regardless of where purchases are made.
The data are updated annually using household income inputs from DemoStats and are based on Statistics Canada’s Survey of Household Spending.
How it’s used
- Analyzing customer spending patterns can highlight cross-promotional opportunities. Identify customers who spend a disproportionate share of their disposable income on a specific category of goods or services.
- A hydro company can use HouseholdSpend to support an energy conservation program by targeting PRIZM® segments where electricity bills account for a higher-than-average share of total utility spending.
- Healthcare providers can use HouseholdSpend to monitor trade areas for prescription and over-the-counter drug purchase trends, which may reflect changes in population age profiles.
Sample questions it can answer
- What product categories do households in my trade area spend the most on, and what share of total spending do these categories represent?
- How much do my customers spend on average on clothing, rent and groceries?
- Where can I find neighbourhoods with high childcare expenses?
- Are expenditures in my trade area higher, lower or the same as the general population?
